Comment on Hype or not? AI’s benefits for developers explored in the 2023 Developer Survey by ouflak https://stackoverflow.blog/2023/06/14/hype-or-not-developers-have-something-to-say-about-ai/#comment-3213227 Tue, 20 Jun 2023 11:30:00 +0000 https://stackoverflow.blog/?p=22308#comment-3213227 But this isn’t true Artificial Intelligence is it? And the fact that a company as supposedly reputable as StackExchange would even refer to it as such is rather worrying. If humans ever do truly develop a sentient intelligence, that will be among the greatest breakthroughs technologically, philosophically, and scientifically in the history of mankind. It will answer so many open questions about our place in the universe and what it means to be a Creator, and it will open up so many more questions that we can’t even fathom at this point in our existence. Our very assumptions about how we define reality, the ethics of living things, even how far should we should go in bringing new life into the universe and the means we choose to do so, will all be called into the deepest question – perhaps revised, perhaps completely revamped.

If this was truly ‘AI’, the rep farmers have abandoned their efforts with it immediately. Because a truly sentient being would have enough awareness and perspective to be able to say some of the wisest words any intelligent being can ever utter, “I don’t know.” And that would be the answer, though depressingly unsatisfying, that would be returned almost all of the time to their inquiries.

I don’t have any issues with these chatbot LLM’s. I think there is great potential for their positive contribution in many notable and interesting settings, and I genuinely hope that is pursued. But that doesn’t mean we should let go of our own ethical responsibilities. We should NOT allow a flood of incorrect information, in some cases potentially dangerously incorrect information, to flood and dominate the Q/A sites. This can destroy the good reputation of StackExchange. This can open up the business to avoidable liability. I do hope that once the leadership of StackExchange peers through the marketing gimmickry, they reel in their enthusiasm and will begin to take more practical and pragmatic approaches to all of this.

Coder, Data Engineer.

Asking for the most basic accommodations- clear expectations, clear directions, (exploratory data analysis, many unknowns, few knowns) reasonable deadlines, clear asks, re-evaluation of the deadline when the ask develops into something more complex or time consuming (lean/agile, scrum, sprint cycle based PM)

I simply get let go.

out of work now, going on 2.5 quarters… job market flooded with NT’s (seems like) and there’s just no room for us ND’s.

Sure, i’m good at what i do; typically accomplish 50-60 hrs of work in 35; but no one cares when you don’t have a portfolio (confidential/proprietary work), when you can’t get through a boot camp (instructor says “google it”, and i end up having to code review and correct both english and coding language for a boot camp where i went specifically to learn the [programming] language) and assignments, that from a developers perspective apply non of the data engineering or software development principles).

Meanwhile- google and 98% of all instruction sets are missing steps. Or it just assumes too much. Or my learning disability is keeping me from being able to get through the “sticky” parts.

Sticky brain… ya, that’s a thing.

Then there’s dealing with people. Sure, i’ve got 30+ years in customer service- but we’re not talking about the same customers from 30 years ago.

the english language has been commandeered and usurped by whatever and whomever feels like it.
there’s no rule book for what words are good to use, and what words are bad to use.

keeping it strictly professional doesn’t work either. it exposes the ND. makes us look rude, or cold, or un friendly. How to work on a team as an ND?

and how to deal with the small-talk-chit-chat-sports-weather asinine topics that don’t actually contribute to the diminishing of my work load?

All this to say…

while it’s “nice” to hear organizations are becoming more accommodating to the ND community, i won’t believe it till i see it.
and i’m not seeing it.

5 roles later, having been dropped for being an ND….
i’m not seeing it.

One of them would be to have an AI exploit the code and suggest ways to prevent those exploits. Another would be an Ai that could create and in human readable form describe tests for existing code to greatly improve code coverage even in ancient code written by developers long gone.
Having an AI create tests and test descriptions based on human input would be great and allow for an AI to create code that meets the test criteria. Another great thing would be an AI that would be able to make reasonable performance estimates for existing code allowing it to identify performance bottlenecks and suggest improvements to overcome those.

Really the possibilities are endless, the main thing I’m expecting in the not to distant future is a polished system that can given a description of what it should create including performance characteristics and such produce the whole thing including tests test descriptions, performance tests and interface documentation etc etc basically ready to run in a large scale real world situation exposed to the interwebs.

Looking at the progress being made I’d expect this to arrive before 2030 putting a lot of people out of work real fast.

I don’t mind the idea of fixing obvious syntax errors, but even spelling correction for identifiers is risky, and many if not most of production errors arise due to deep problems with my algorithm or assumptions. I’m terrified of an LLM trying to fix database write issues without a human in the loop.

If I may, look into speech to text. If you might make the leap to AI processing on the beginning of a task, you might find that it’s easy to overthink what you’re doing, but if you have a solid idea of your outline before you begin, being less sorting specific at first and more overall descriptive might be a great way to start. Good luck and happy coding.

It’s not full on or full off, black or white. There are grays as well. I have enough that I am constantly off on tangents when trying to absorb new information, and occasionally in the zone enough to be late for a meeting or two, but not so much that I’m either OCD or unable to function in other ways. As such, I find I do have a high degree of creativity, but learning new things requires more time to focus and absorb information. I’m convinced this is because with each sentence I read, my mind is exploring every angle, trying to fit the new piece of the information into my existing mental jigsaw puzzle, to make it more complete. When I push the learning speed too much, I totally lose the information altogether. But finding MY pace and not someone else’s has been key for me.

For example, when I answered that survey, I wasn’t thinking of GPT models or systems like co-pilot. I was specifically thinking about Visual Studio’s Intellicode, which can’t be directly compared to the other two. While it is extremely helpful and trustworthy, the two former are not, and are very much hype-driven. The failure to be more specific is a failure to collect reliable data, which in turn means your interpretation of that data is going to be unreliable.

To a professional developer with nearly 2 decades of experience, SO’s discussion of AI has been misguided and vague, loaded with marketing lingo but very little true substance. This is yet another example in that ongoing saga.

Two questions:

Are “admired” and “desired” defined in the same way as “loved” and “wanted” in previous years? Based on a very quick comparison, “desired” percentages seem to be roughly the same as “loved” last year for the same technologies, but “admired” percentages are at least in some cases clearly higher. It would be nice to have the same terminology and definitions to allow comparing with last year.

Also, could you add the possibility of sorting technologies by “admired”? During previous years, the most loved lists have been really interesting, but now I cannot find a way to get this information except by visually comparing where the red dots are.

The blue and red dots on the admired/desired charts can be difficult to distinguish for some, and the legend is below the fold. Never use just color to distinguish data points. The methodology section does not explain how “admired” and “desired” were inferred from the have-worked-with and want-to-work-with responses. I suspect the details would explain why the desires were always higher than the admires. “Asynchronous” and “synchronous” tools are new terms to me, and I don’t recall seeing them in the survey questions. Looking at the list of tools in each section, it’s not 100% clear to me how to distinguish between them. (Yes, I have some sense of it, but it must not be complete because I’d switch some of them around.) As for collaboration tools, I’d wager that the most common ones are email and source control, and–perhaps–bug /task tracking and code review tools, yet I don’t see any of those in either list. There doesn’t seem to be a development categories for embedded systems, libraries/frameworks, and developer tools. For me, one of the biggest takeaways is how _overwhelmingly_ the interpreted programming language usage dominates that of compiled languages. I’d love to see more intersectional analysis around that.

Great point. We have a podcast coming out tomorrow with the PM leading up Google’s Duet coding assistant. He makes the point that right now AI can be helpful for making suggestions or acting as a kind of autonomous linter or PR helper, but that it doesn’t currently have the capability to replace humans or be trusted to work without the typical human in the loop SDLC. For the moment, seems like it’s augmenting what developers and teams can do, not replacing them.

To be fair your article is ludicrous…

Vim is unsurpassed in text editing speed, Emacs has Org Mode, which alone warrants it’s use.

Also they’re both still around (unlike Atom!) and whilst MS has done a stunning job with trying to make an electron app performance with Vs Code, it’s still a bloated Electron app.

As Devs we do use IDE’s such as Intellij for core development -for work – check your stack overflow Developer surveys for the real picture instead of making up straw-man arguments about stubbornness and resistance to a change in routine – attitudes like that get you left behind in the marketplace and cost you money in the long run! I ‘m 36 and use Intellij, Vim and Emacs nearly every day for work.

We should hire for competence alone. That has been and always will be the only fair system. If the final population is overrepresented by any particular group then those are the people who decided to make those particular skills a priority in their personal development. It’s not a problem and means nothing more than that.

If you really want to improve fairness, do blind interviews with voice masking so you don’t know anything about the individual other than their ability to display their skill set, problem solved.

The pareto distribution is a real thing and we are going to break the world trying to bend it, and we will ultimately fail anyway, or at least, I’d bet on it. We need software that solves real problems, not a self-congratulatory slog that will ultimately change nothing and push us right into the very totalitarianism we claim to resist.

It could save us developers so much time and improve the overall reliability of our applications. However, I am concerned about potential risks and the impact on code quality.

Striking a balance between automation and manual intervention will be crucial to ensure the integrity of our systems. Nevertheless, I’m optimistic about the possibilities that self-healing code brings. Great read!

Rather at this rate, LLMs will merely “learn” that the most likely solution to enact delegation for someone else to do it.
Considering every professional programmer in the world is objectively bad at their job (because they still have their job and they created LLMs to their image of poor performance), AI will simply be another agent in the loop.

Comment on More on our AI future: building course recommendations and a new data platform by Justin Fung https://stackoverflow.blog/2023/05/29/more-on-our-ai-future-building-course-recommendations-and-a-new-data-platform/#comment-3209456 Tue, 20 Jun 2023 06:02:00 +0000 https://stackoverflow.blog/?p=22205#comment-3209456 Cool project! Post is well-written and easy to read.

Have you integrated account age into the course recommendation service? I imagine newer accounts (potentially newer developers) would have higher click-through rates than older accounts (probably seasoned developers) and if that’s true then you can increase the value of the course providers’ ad spend a bit.

Likewise, you might be able to somehow classify how “elementary” a stack overflow question is and use that as an input into whether or not to serve a course ad. The idea being that viewers of “simpler” topics (e.g. “what is the difference between const and let in javascript?”) would be more likely to pursue a course than say viewers of more “difficult” topics (e.g. “why doesn’t WeakMap support Symbols as keys?”). That’d be a cool classification project, perhaps someone at SO already has a method for this that you can borrow.
